Anselm answered the old question, why did God become man, in terms of a historical achievement of atonement through the cross. Dallas, while not dismissing atonement, saw the eternal purpose of Jesus’ coming in terms of Jesus’ unique role in the formation of a small group of Jewish nobodies.
