Modern psychology is a remarkable discipline. In the short time span of less than 150 years, it has gained the esteem of the academy, while producing countless books, journals and conferences. In its contributions to applied and clinical psychology, the modern discipline of psychology has become a respected voice in the mental health world.
It is a very good thing to be able to apply the scientific method in finding solutions for individuals finding themselves on the wrong side, the painful side, of the normal curve.
But, modern psychology does have a significant blind spot, so to speak. For the most part it only concerns itself with what can be seen and measured, which leaves out vital, arguably the most vital, aspects of the human being. These are the various functions of human life that you can’t see or measure, soul, spirit, heart, will, mind, and consciousness.
Dallas Willard did not ignore these parts of the person. In fact, in 1991, he was the keynote speaker at the first conference to be held in the United States under the banner “Clinical Theology.” And, four years later, he was a keynote speaker at what was dubbed by Thomas Oden, to be the first conference held under the banner “Soul Care.”
It is with these ideas in mind, that Converatio wishes to call your attention to what we hope will be a growing series of contributions to what we (with a tip of the hat to psychiatrist Frank Lake), are calling Clinical Theology. By this term we mean to imply the healing aspects of life with God, Eternal living, here and now.
We will begin by calling your attention to the essays and talks that are already on Converastio which draw from the disciplines of theology, psychology, philosophy, and spiritual formation and are aimed at providing help for what Dallas Willard might refer to as the “CEO of the person”.
