The ruin of the human soul comes from self-obsession. Paul describes in Romans 1 that when we refuse to retain God in our knowledge, we inevitably turn back on ourselves. And we fruitlessly attempt to use the resources of our body and our social contexts to gratify us, to direct us, and to fill our lives. Jesus comes into the world to show us the way out of this descending spiral and to begin the restoration process of reclaiming our souls.
