In 1993 Dallas was invited to speak at the yearly pastor's retreat for the American Baptist Churches of the Pacific Southwest. It was a time when "spiritual formation" was only starting to be discussed by evangelicals and Dallas was only starting to be known for "spiritual formation." In these talks he is trying to explain the concept to fellow Baptists.
